Happy birthday to Charles Chaplin, Jr.
(May 5, 1925 - March 20, 1968)
Charles Jr. was the first son of Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey.  Before he was born, his father paid a doctor $25,000 to falsify his birth certificate with the wrong date so that it would appear he was conceived after Charlie & Lita were married. So for the first 11 years of his life, Charlie Jr thought his birthday was June 28th. His mother told him the truth while she was recovering from a nervous breakdown.
In 1960, Charlie Jr wrote a book called My Father, Charlie Chaplin, it is a touching and honest tribute to the father he adored. He appeared in his father’s film Limelight, but otherwise had a difficult time making a name for himself in Hollywood. He was once asked, bluntly, if he was as good as his father.
Charlie didn’t want his son to have his full name (and only did so at Lita’s insistence) because he knew it would give him a cross to bear for the rest of his life, and I think he was right.  For most of his adult life, he battled alcoholism, something that disappointed Charlie who watched his own father succomb to the disease. Charlie Jr. was found dead from a heart attack at his grandmother Lillian Grey’s home on March 20th, 1968. He was only 42.
The photo of Charlie Jr. is inscribed to Marilyn Monroe, whom he dated when she was in her early 20s. The inscription reads: “To Marilyn, With sincerest hopes that you become a great actress. Feb 28, 1947, Charlie Chaplin, Jr.”
